People are so health conscious these days. From Essential oils, to certain natural food diets, we seem to be all searching for that “thing” that will give us good health and long life, and just a better way of living. Here is some “food” for thought though. In the 1930’s, there was a nutritionist by the name of Clive McCay who designed a low-calorie diet for his lab rats. He kept them as thin as supermodels, and he claimed they lived to the human equivalent years of 130. So he started applying this to himself. He ate only foods from his own fields, and he was trim and athletic, but had two strokes and died at age 69. Oh, and then there is the man who wrote the books, “The 120 Year Diet, and, “Beyond the 120 Year Diet.” He had quite a following, but died at age 79. We all remember Euell Gibbons, who advocated for a diverse plant diet. Well, he suffered an aortic aneurysm at age 64. But the one that impresses me the most is Jerome Rodale, founder of a publishing empire dedicated to health. Dick Cavett invited him to his show in 1971, because he was hailed as, “the guru of the organic food cult.” Rodale took the chair next to Dick Cavett, proclaimed he would live to be 100, made a snoring sound, and died. He was 72, and they never aired that program. We do spend a lot of time worrying about our outside health, but I wonder if maybe we spend more time worrying about it, than we do our inner self. Scripture tells us: “Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 You see, we are to take care of our physical health, and I am not advocating that we do not, but are we so concentrated on that, that we are failing or neglecting our inner self, simply because we are so overwhelmed with ways to try to be healthier or live longer. I wonder! God has appointed us so much time here on earth, and it seems like many of these above, spent an exorbitant amount of time concerned about that which they seemed not to be able to change. Be healthy, but maybe we should start with that health that is so much more important – our spiritual health. Let’s feed on the Word of God, and drink from the fountain of faith, for doing such will make sure that no matter how long we are given here physically, we will end at the gates of eternity, excited about the next journey, and not worrying about what we will eat.
Heavenly Father, Lord, You are the Food of life that we so need and desire. Please fill us with Your food, the food that will not spoil or turn bad. Fill us so that our soul’s are filled with the truth of Your word, and that we learn to balance the outside, but keep what’s inside the healthiest we can. We realize that we can only do that through Your strength, Your grace, Your mercy, Your will, for Lord, we know that You know every moment that we live on this earth, and You Lord, know our hearts, so I pray for hearts, turned toward You. May we be filled with You in Jesus name.
