Trees Walking

Mark 8 ²² They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. ²³ He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”  ²⁴ He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”  ²⁵ Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.

How many of us are currently in relationships that seem so blurry and we are unable to think or see clearly? How many of us know other folks who are blind spiritually? Let’s look at the passage above and see if it can help guide us.  Jesus spat on a blind’s man’s eyes (seems gross but that’s what happened.  He can spit on me anytime!).  Then, “Jesus asked, ‘Do you see anything?’  The blind man looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”  I am not sure of all the spiritual implications of “trees walking” but know that he was not seeing people clearly.  Then, Jesus touched the man the second time and “his eyes were opened, his sight was restored and he saw everything clearly.”  Wow!  What an experience for the man and the folks who brought him to Jesus.

I could surmise about this from my opinion and go off on many different tangents.  But, I won’t.  Let’s allow the passage simply speak for itself.

“Some people brought a blind man” to Jesus.  It is not definitive, simply states “people.”  This begs for a question.  Do we who know someone who is blind who needs to be taken to Jesus?

Then, it says these people “begged Jesus to touch him.”  They “begged!”  Of course, this begs for second question.  Are we genuinely concerned for another person at a depth that we are willing to beg Jesus on their behalf?

Finally, in the passage, the man simply stated to Jesus, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”  He made a confession that His vision is unclear.   How many of us need to openly, humbly confess to Jesus that the way we see people, our relationships is blurry?  I believe if we will, in due time, like the blind man, you will be able to see clearly.

Go back and read this passage and meditate on it “seeing” how God wants to bring clarity to problematic, hurtful, confusing relationships in your life.  Allow Him to touch you “once more.”

Are we willing to beg Jesus for someone?
