Calamity is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “a disastrous event marked by great loss and lasting distress and suffering.” As most of us recognize, we are indeed in a horrible time of global calamity brought on by the Coronavirus COVID-19. When calamity comes the Bible tells us how to behave.
Take Refuge in God. Prov. 14 32 When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God. When the world around is being brought down (chaos), we take refuge in God. A refuge is “shelter or protection from danger or distress.”
Continue to rise up and not get discouraged because we trust in an almighty God. Proverbs 24 16 for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.
In the midst of darkness trust our God and fear no evil. Psalms 23 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
One of the most powerful verses in the Bible and a go-to for many of us gives great counsel in the midst of calamity. Proverbs 3:5&6 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
