“As a boy growing up in Georgia, I remember being enamored with the “fool’s gold” deposits left in Georgia clay. We would dig into a red clay bank left from construction or in a ditch caused by erosion to find what we thought for sure was gold. “We are rich!!”…only to later realize that this wonderful shiny discovery was actually “fool’s gold” and worthless. How disappointed were young “discovers” like my friends and me!
“Fool’s gold” is an accurate metaphor for today’s world.
For us who are believers, this is what “fool’s gold” looks like. 1 Corinthians 3, “11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss.” If we spend our life building on anything other than that which brings glory to Jesus Christ, we have wasted our time as believers discovering “fool’s gold”.
Let’s take a quick look at “fool’s gold” in this world. John 2:15 describes it this way, “15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” If your affection and focus is based on the love and lusts of this world, live it up while you can because in eternal life “its desires pass away.” “Fool’s gold” has significance for only a finite time…your days are numbered.
Real Gold that has eternal value is discovered in 1 Peter 1:3,4&7, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead… an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade…the proven genuineness of your faith of greater worth than gold…resulting in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” That my friend is Real Gold of great value now and forevermore.
